Week 1 -5
The egg and sperm meet and once the two cells join
they begin to multiply rapidly. Once implanted in
the uterine lining the inner cells develop into embryo
while the outer cells nourish your baby and become
the amniotic sac and placenta.

Week 10
The baby is now entering the fetal period. The average
size is around 27-35 mm crown to rump. S/He weighs
in at 4 grams (4 paperclips!). Tiny toes have formed
and the eyes are largely open but the eyelids are
beginning to fuse. External ears are completely formed
as well as the upper lip.

Week 12-13
Although baby’s brain is not the same size
as it will be at birth it does have the same structure.
Tiny unique fingerprints also now also in place. S/He
weighs about 14 grams and is approximately 3.5 inches
in total length. Your risk of miscarriage is now greatly
reduced.

Week 16
Your baby’s nails are well formed and s/he
is emptying their bladder every 40-45 minutes. The
skeleton is also starting to harden. Limb movements
are becoming more coordinated. Baby weighs about 85
grams and is about 16cm in length. The sex of your
baby may be detectable by ultrasound.

Week 24
Baby is almost completely formed by this stage. Fat
is beginning to be deposited and wrinkled skin is
beginning to smooth out. Eyelids and eyebrows are
now in place. S/He weighs in at around 1lb 5oz (595
grams) and is about 30cm in total length!

special arrival

Week 30-32
Baby is very aware of its surroundings. S/He can
open and close her eyes and experience light and dark
depending on mothers surroundings and environment.
It may be possible to distinguish sleep and awake
cycles in your baby. You maybe experiencing some braxton
hicks contractions, these are just practice tightings
of your uterus and a sign that your body is getting
ready for labour.
Baby weighs a beautiful 3 lb (1.36 kg) and measures
around 37.5cm in length!

Week 38-40
Your baby is now waiting to greet the world, as space
is getting tight! A layer of fat continues to build
to help control his body temperature after birth.
Baby measures around 20 inches in length and probably
weighs a little over 7lb. Now is the time to get lots
of rest and enjoy the excitement and preparation for
that special bundle.
